I have been studying the prophet's recent message to the world, The Healing Power of Gratitude. PDF In it he said,
Jesus Christ frequently expressed gratitude. Before raising Lazarus from the dead, before miraculously multiplying loaves and fishes, and before passing the cup to His disciples at the Last Supper, the Savior prayed and gave thanks to God. No wonder the Apostle Paul later declared, “In every thing give thanks.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18.)
Look at the pattern! He gave thanks before receiving. So, should I go ahead and mail you a thank you card right now for the awesome Christmas gift you'll be sending me?! How about a month before my birthday, I send out cards thanking people for the gifts they'll be sending? That's such a funny and (truthfully) awkward thought!!! Even presumptuous!
But with God, our Father, He knows our hearts. He won't see any awkwardness, presumptuousness, or pride in it. Because WE know He and His son are good, and we KNOW They'll give us gifts, and we KNOW They loves us, and so we can give thanks right now!!
